A Wish for Singapore’s 47th Birthday

As we celebrate our island’s 47th birthday and reflect upon our nation’s achievements through the decades, let us count our blessings, focus on the positives, fill our cups to overflowing with optimism for the future, and choose to be glad rather than to be sad.

There are lots of things to be happy about.  We have managed to win two Olympic bronze medals – a record haul for a nation more known for its academic than sporting brilliance. We have managed to keep the economy humming along despite the ominous challenges surrounding us in the world and the region. We have managed to find innovative solutions to our problems, squarely facing thorny issues head-on instead of trying to evade them.

Our streets are safe and mostly clean, our living environments are bathed in luscious greenery, and our towering shopping complexes offer a free climatic respite from the searing tropical heat. Our cuisines are probably one of the best (if not the best) in the world, with price ranges that suit everybody – from three-star Michelin chef restaurants to humble hawker stalls dishing out delectable fares. Our visitor attractions like zoos, museums, and theme parks are comparable to some of the best in the world.

For sure, Singapore is not perfect. Neither are we. However, it tries and tries again. This spirit of resilience, determination and grit is something that we should seek to embody in all our endeavours – at work, at school, or at home.

Instead of moaning and groaning about how bad things are, why don’t we celebrate and rejoice over how good things are. Instead of taking potshots at everything and everybody, why don’t we dish out compliments and praises. Instead of making mountains out of molehills, why don’t we devote our intellectual prowess and energies to solving them.

This National Day, let us cast aside our differences and zoom in on the things which unite and bind us as a people, as a community, and as a nation. Quoting from John F Kennedy, let us ask not what Singapore can do for us but what we can do for Singapore.

Happy 47th Birthday Singapore!
